| Background | Patrick practices primarily in employment law and litigation. He represents employers in myriad types of employment disputes arising from terminations, discrimination claims, benefits decisions, wage and hour claims, and unfair labor practice charges. Patrick also handles cases involving civil rights claims against public entities, commercial and contract disputes, and insurance claim practices. His clients have included local, national, and international corporations, non-profit organizations and educational institutions, school districts, counties, municipalities, elected and appointed government officials, as well as individual managers, executives, and shareholders. Patrick regularly appears in state and federal trial courts throughout Iowa, as well as before the Iowa Supreme Court, Iowa Court of Appeals, and United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit. He practices before administrative agencies with jurisdiction over employers, such as the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), Iowa Civil Rights Commission, National Labor Relations Board (NLRB), and Iowa Workers' Compensation Commissioner. Patrick's experience includes litigation involving single plaintiffs, multiple plaintiffs, class actions, and collective actions. In addition to litigation, Patrick's practice includes consulting with employers on legal compliance, drafting employment policies and handbooks, management training, internal investigations, litigation avoidance, union related issues, and risk management. He lectures on various employment law topics to human resource professionals and attorneys, and publishes the Iowa Employment Law Blog. Patrick is a Charter Fellow of the Litigation Counsel of America, a trial lawyer honorary society. Patrick and his wife Sue have seven children. |
